CRU Presents the Outside World Gallery

Elinor Seath

In the third of our series of exhibitions held in conjunction with The outside World, CRU is pleased to bring you the work of Elinor Seath, who for her first solo show has created a series of stained glass light boxes

Seath lives and works in London and has been creating mosaics as a community artist for the past seven years. She forms part of a dynamic team that undertakes site-specific installations in schools as well as in the wider community.

Two years ago Elinor Seath began to realize her own projects, stained glass being her chosen medium. Her use of text marks Seath’s departure from her publicly commissioned pieces.

In this exhibition she presents words and phrases in three-dimensional forms using stained glass.
Deep back-lit boxes that serve to remove each word from its normal written context and imbue each with its own visual meaning. The strong colours and intense hues are made more so by the projected light that each box throws forth. In an early work from this series the one word ‘HELP’ is a beautifully seductive appeal to the viewer. Cast in a sea of deep green and amber shards the cry for HELP is spelled out by the black lines that hold together the very colours themselves. In ‘Protect Me From What I Want’ the words make up a phrase demanding the viewer to respond, to protect her from her desires, or perhaps remain unprotected amidst the beauty of the translucent and intense coloured lights wherein lie the innate unwritten truths.
